Lithuanian post issues stamp in honour of Red Cross

Lithuania Post (Lietuvos pastas) will join those who are going to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the international Red Cross organization. On Saturday, May 11, Lithuania Post will release a new stamp The 150th Anniversary of the International Red Cross Organization, reported BC Lithuania's post.

The new stamp features the founder of this organization, a Swiss entrepreneur and philanthropist Jean-Henri Dunant, and the waving flag of the Red Cross.

 

The stamp will be released in the edition of 80 thousand copies with a nominal value of LTL 2.15. The author of the stamp is the artist Tomas Dragūnas.

 

Along with the stamp, the first day cover and souvenir sheet will be released. On Saturday, in Vilnius Main Post Office, postal correspondence paid by the new stamp will be marked by the first day cancellation.

 

The international Red Cross organization was founded in 1863 in Geneva (Switzerland) on the initiative of Jean-Henri Dunant. This organization helps combating diseases, provides help to the victims of natural disasters. Also, the organization arranges trainings for nurses, supports donors, gives treatment to sick and wounded troops.

 

The Lithuanian Red Cross society was founded on 12 January 1919 on the efforts of the physician Rokas Šliūpas and other medicals. A lot of famous Lithuanian physicians and health service people were engaged in the activities of the society. The society has established a number of hospitals in Vilnius, Kaunas, Panevėžys, and Klaipėda. The Lithuanian Red Cross was the founder of the first Lithuanian tuberculosis sanatorium in Aukštoji Panemunė as well as blood transfusion establishments of emergency medical service. During the Soviet period, all property of the Red Cross was nationalized, and has not been returned.

 

In the course of a year, Lithuania Post issues on average 25-30 stamps. The company also provides courier, logistic, and financial intermediation services.
