Ministry: tunnel to Helsinki is as realistic as Estonia's own space programme

Estonian economy ministry spokesman Rasmus Ruuda said that no estimates or analyses about a Tallinn-Helsinki undersea tunnel have been compiled in Estonia since it is an unrealistic idea, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Ruuda said that so far, Tallinn-Helsinki railway tunnel hasn't been tackled in the framework of the Rail Baltica feasibility studies and no additional studies about the tunnel have been conducted.

"Estonia could launch its own space programme too and send people to the Moon but that is not realistic. The Tallinn-Helsinki tunnel is just a similar mystification," Ruuda explained the ministry's position.

In February this year, the Finnish transport and communications ministry estimated that a Helsinki-Tallinn undersea railway tunnel would cost at least 3 billion euros.
