"Latvia is the leading partner of the Northern Distribution Network, transporting non-military cargo to Afghanistan by air and land. The country is currently working on ensuring cargo transportation from Afghanistan when NATO will reduce its presence there. Cargo transportation services not only benefit Latvia's economy, but also ensure the country's contribution to the alliance's common goals," said Dombrovskis.

Cargo transit to Afghanistan was on also on the agenda during the prime minister's U.S. visit last summer.

As reported, regular air cargo transportation to Afghanistan was launched in April. Two to three flights (with around 100 tons of cargo each) are performed each day.
