Klaipeda Port remained in a leader’s position in Baltic in January-November

According to cargo handling turnover in Baltic Ports in the period of January – November 2011 Klaipeda Port remained in a leader’s position and was ahead both the neighbouring Ports of Riga and Ventspils and the Joint Port of Tallinn (Muuga, Paldiskis, „Old City“). The advantage of Klaipėda Port over the Joint Port of Tallinn decreased even up to 163,3 thousand tons in January – November of 2011.

The overall cargo handling of Klaipeda Port and Būtingė Terminal was 42,0 million tons in January – November of 2011 and exceeded the handling turnover of the Joint Port of Tallinn even by 8,5 million tons, reported BC statistic specialist of marketing department at Klaipeda Port Žymantas Sinkevičius.

The highest increase in cargo turnover throughout the period of eleven month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2010 was reached due to increased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (+2 036,0 thousand tons), liquid natural and chemical fertilizers (+828,7 thousand tons), containerized cargoes (+670,2 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+570,9 thousand tons), bulk iron ore (+558,3 thousand tons) and oil products (+376,2 thousand tons),

 

In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of dry and bulk cargo with the handling turnover totalling to 13 403,6thousand tons (39,8% of overall Port handling turnover) increased mostly(by 24,8%).). General cargo handling volumes accelerated by 14,4%, the handling volumes of this cargo group were 10 156,3thousand tons ( 30,0% of overall Port handling turnover).

 

   The handling turnover of liquefied cargo advanced by 14,0% to 10 108,6 thousand tons (30,2% of overall Port handling turnover.

 

6 572vessels, i.e. more by 2,7% or by 173 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of the previous yearcalled Klaipėda Port in January – November of the current year.The number of passengerscalling the Portthroughout the analysed periodwas 303 180, i.e. less by 0,1% or by 418 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2010.

 

Klaipėda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling in the region of the Baltic countries. 350 962 TEU, i.e. more by 30,9% comparing to the correspondingperiodof 2010 (the increase made82 877TEU) were handled in Klaipėda Port in January – November of 2011.
