Klaipeda Port became a leader among Baltic ports in January-October

With the sea born totalling to 30,7 million tons Klaipėda Port’s cargo handling growth rate throughout ten month of this year was even 21,1 % up comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year. According to cargo handling turnover in Baltic Ports in the period of January – October of 2011 Klaipeda Port became a leader and was ahead both the neighbouring Ports of Riga and Ventspils and the Joint Port of Tallinn ((Muuga), Paldiskis, „Old City“).

The advantage of Klaipėda Port over the Joint Port of Tallin decreased up to 230,8 thousand tons in of January – October of 2011. The total cargo handling of Klaipeda Port and Būtingė Terminal was 38,2 million tons in January – October of 2011 and exceeded the handling turnover of the Joint Port of Tallinn even by 7,8 million tons, reported BC press service of Klaipeda Seaport.

 

The highest increase in cargo turnover throughout the period often month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2010 was reached due to increased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (+2 070,1 thousand tons), liquid natural and chemical fertilizers (+938,4 thousand tons), containerized cargoes (+664,6 thousand tons), oil products (+529,2 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+516,2 thousand tons) and bulk iron ore (+480,0 thousand tons).

 

In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of dry and bulk cargo with the handling turnover totalling to 12 195,6 thousand tons (39,7% of general Port handling turnover) increased mostly (by 26,7%). The handling turnover of liquefied cargo advanced by 19,5% to 9 224,7 thousand tons (30,0% of general Port handling turnover). General cargo handling volumes accelerated by 15,8%, the handling volumes of this cargo group were 9 284,7 thousand tons ( 30,3percent of general Port handling turnover).

 

5 862 vessels, i.e. more by 4,7% or by 265 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year called Klaipėda Port in January – October of the current year. The number of passengers calling the Port throughout the analysed period was 282 880, i.e. less by 1,0% or by 2 840 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2010.

 

Klaipėda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling in the region of the Baltic countries. 324 712 TEU, i.e. more by 34,4% comparing to the corresponding period of 2010 (the increase made83 161TEU) were handled in Klaipėda Port in January – October of 2011.
