In future, a section of Lithuanian coastline bike paths from the Latvian border to Nida will be developed as a segment of the international cycle route network EuroVelo 13 and Iron Curtain Trail, the Lithuanian Transport Ministry reports.

Presentation of this project to the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport was made by Michael Cramer, Member of the European Parliament.

"The Iron Curtain Trail is a significant and fine project, which could be implemented by Lithuania together with other European countries. A largest portion of bike paths necessary for the route is already available in Lithuania", said Arunas Staras, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications.

Michael Cramer, who is actively promoting the bicycle transport and cognitive tourism over a decade, noted that the bicycle transport is becoming more and more popular in Europe and every year it grows by approximately 20%, writes LETA/ELTA.

The total length of EuroVelo 13 – the Iron Curtain Trail route – is more than 7000 km. It marks the boundaries of the Iron Curtain that divided Europe during the cold war period after the World War II.

The cycle route starts at the Barenc Sea in Norway, lasts along the State borders of Finland and Russia to the Baltic Sea, then continues along the coastline of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Kaliningrad District, Poland to the German town Lubek. Further the Iron Curtain Trail continues along the former wall that divided East and West Germany, then along the Czech border with Germany and Austria, afterwards the route continues along the Austrian borders with Slovakia and Hungary, reaches the Former Yugoslav Republic, Romania and Bulgaria. The route ends at the Bulgarian town Carev on the Black Sea.

The route goes via numerous national parks, unique landscapes that have remained intact due to the proximity of the former no-go areas.

Twenty European countries participate in the project which introduces to the European culture and history. Many segments of the route are already marked and functioning.
