Estonian Air to close its base in Vilnius

Estonian Air that had operated flight routes from Vilnius to Amsterdam and to Stockholm will close its Lithuanian base as both of these routes were not making any profit, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.

Vice President of the Estonian national carrier Rauno Parras explained that Estonian Air was satisfied with the occupancy rate on the flights, but due to the increase in fuel prices they were still making a loss and a business enterprise cannot afford it.

Estonian Air launched the Vilnius-Amsterdam route in February last year and added later a route to Stockholm.

“A year and a half ago, the aviation market in Lithuania was in decline and entering a market with low competition was reasonable,” commented Parras. “Today, however, competition in the Vilnius Airport has multiplied and due to the increase in Estonia, it is difficult to justify keeping an aircraft in Vilnius,” he added.

“The number of our passengers in Tallinn has grown by nearly a third in the past few months, and therefore we wish to increase the frequency of flights on the schedule and also to launch new destinations,” said the Vice President of Estonian Air.
