If the Irish low-fare airline Ryanair leaves Riga airport, there will not only be less competition at the airport and tourism development in the country will be hindered, but airline tickets will also become more expensive, former transport minister and current Saeima Deputy Ainars Slesers (For a Good Latvia) said in an interview today for LETA Video.

Ainars Slesers.

He explained prices will always be higher with less competition, furthermore, Ryanair has changed the aviation business in Latvia – airlines tickets have reduced from LVL 1,000 to as low as LVL 10-20, writes LETA.

As reported, Riga International Airport does not intend to stop servicing Ryanair, the airport informed the business information portal Nozare.lv.

Riga Airport CEO Arnis Luhse emphasized that the airport has not discussed the issue with Ryanair.

The airport has not suggested Ryanair fly to Tukums Airport, instead of Riga, and the Irish company has not come up with such a proposal as well. If Ryanair will decide to do so, then it will most likely be to reduce costs, emphasized the airport.

The agreement with Ryanair is in force until 2015, and currently there are no plans to review it.

LETA also reported, Economy Minister Artis Kampars (Unity) previously explained that development of Tukums Airport will be beneficial for business activity in local towns and counties and will create new jobs.
