Since Lithuania has finally reached a decision on the route of the Rail Baltica railway, the process can move further and the feasibility of building a new railway line with European width in the Baltic states should become clear on May 31, 2011, LETA/Eesti Päevaleht Online reports.

The report on construction possibilities of Rail Baltica was to be submitted on March 31 but Lithuania okayed its railway route only last week. Estonia and Latvia had done so earlier.

“It is not yet clear whether it is feasible to build a new railway, it will become clear only at the end of May,” said Estonian economy ministry railways department manager Ain Tatter. “Economically it is most likely not possible to earn back he finances for building a completely new railway, thus the European Union has to reach clarity, analysing the possible cargo and passenger volumes, whether financing the railway will result in enough benefits for regional political development of or region,” he said.

If the Baltic States get the financial support from EU funds, a completely new railway with European width will run at the route Tallinn-Pärnu-Riga-Bauska-Panevezis-Kaunas.
