In the first six months of the year 2008, Estonian Railways earned a profit of 42,328,000 kroons.

The company generated sales revenue of 778,436,000 kroons in the first half of the year, writes EPL Online.

Despite the abruptly fallen volume of freight transport since last spring, Estonian Railways managed to earn a profit of more than 42 million kroons in the first half of the year. This was achieved due to fast and efficient decisions on cutting costs and increasing efficiency.

This year the company plans to cut back another couple of hundred jobs.

In the first six months of the year 2008, 13.4 million tonnes of goods were carried on the infrastructure of Estonian Railways – i.e. by 8.89 million tonnes less than in the first six months of the year 2007.

In the first half of the year 2007, Estonian Railways generates sales revenue of 974 million kroons and the enterprise earned a profit of 46 million kroons.
