Estonia might get this season’s first ice road already

Due to the cold weather of the past few days, 70% of the Suur Väin straits between the island of Muhu and mainland is frozen and in places ice is 7-8 cm thick, thus the first ice road of this season might be opened much earlier than usual during winter season, LETA/Õhtuleht Online reports.

"The Highways Board will in the next few days make an application to the Waterways Board to close ship traffic on the possible ice roads areas when permanent ice cover emerges,” said Highways Board road maintenance department head Rain Hallimäe yesterday.

Last year, ship traffic was closed to enable to open an ice road on some routes on Christmas Eve and the traffic was enabled again on March 8.

There were four ice roads last winter: Haapsalu-Noarootsi, Rohuküla-Vormsi, mainland-Hiiumaa and Hiiumaa-Saaremaa. The route that connects the mainland and the island of Muhu, which in turn is connected by a dam to Estonia’s largest island Saaremaa, was not opened.
