Belarus will make the final decision on Venezuelan oil transit via Baltic ports by the end of 2010, and it is very likely that Belarus will import Venezuelan oil not just via Klaipeda Port but also other Baltic ports, including Riga Port, said Belarusian Deputy Economy Minister Anatoly Filonov, as LETA/Euronews reported yesterday referring to ITAR-TASS.

"Two to two-and-a-half million tons a year will be shipped via Klaipeda Port each year, but we are also considering other options, other ports. There have been offers from the Port of Riga," said the minister.

Filonov also said that Belarus planned to make the final decision regarding Venezuelan oil transit via Baltic ports by the end of this year. "These decisions will be passed in December, after the feasibility studies will have concluded. I believe that it will be not just Klaipeda," explained Filonov.

Latvian Transport Minister Kaspars Gerhards (For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK) previously said that he had a high opinion of the Riga Port's determination to achieve that Venezuelan oil is shipped to Belarus via Latvia, but he also said that the Port of Ventspils was much better prepared for such shipments.
