Tallinn Airport aims to get more intercontinental flights
Airport operator AS Tallinna Lennujaam board member Erik Sakkov said that companies continue to be interested in flying from Tallinn but due to confidentiality requirements did not reveal any facts.
“Estonia’s problem is known to all, we are small,” said Sakkov, exclaiming that thus low-cost carriers like Ryanair are very important clients as they brings in tourists since there aren’t enough people in Estonia.
Launching new routes has made the airport’s passenger figures forecast more optimistic. This year Tallinn airport is forecast to service up to 1.45 mln passengers, last year it was 1.35 mln.
“This year we are nicely in black. The increase next year will be rather big, we expect 1.7 or even 1.8 mln passengers,” said Sakkov.
Sakkov said that in long-term perspective it is a very big and major task for the airport to get an intercontinental regular flight departing from here. He said it might take 5-10 years but the first inter-continental flights could take place earlier.
He said that it won’t be a venture on the basis of Estonian people but for example Asian people, following the example of Finnair.
