Estonian shipbuilding company Baltic Workboats, located in the island of Saaremaa, is expanding its production and intends to start using wind and solar energy as well as warmth of sea water, LETA/National Broadcasting reports.

In ten years the company that started with 9 workers has become an acknowledged builder of small ships in Europe and has 80 workers now. The company received nearly 40 mln kroons from Enterprise Estonia recently to invest in equipment and new production facility.

“We plan to have a turnover of 180 mln kroons this year. Every year has brought around 15-20% turnover growth," said Baltic Workboats council member Märten Vaikmaa.

The economic recession hasn’t affected the building of small ships and the company has contracts for the next three years in place.

The company intends to soon install a wind energy generator to provide the industry energy and install solar panels for heating and hot water of the buildings as well as take advantage of the warmth of sea water.”We want to make our production as green and ecologically clean as possible,” said Vaikmaa.
