airBaltic could establish airline in another country, but not in 2010

The national airline airBaltic could establish an airline in another country, as airBaltic President and co-owner Bertolt Flick said in an interview with the business portal Nozare.lv.

"I believe that airBaltic definitely could establish an airline in another country," said Flick. Although he declined to elaborate, he said that this would not happen this year.

On the other hand, Flick's Baltijas aviacijas sistemas (BAS), which is the co-owner of airBaltic and announced last week that it was planning to set up an airline in Lithuania, will not establish new airlines elsewhere for the time being, said Flick.

Commenting the plans of BAS for Lithuania, Flick said that airBaltic, with its current business mode, would not be able to implement such projects in a profitable way, writes LETA.

"We must understand that airBaltic cannot be a monopoly in all three Baltic countries, there is, and will always be, competition. There is the minimum number of destinations that a capital simply must have flights to in order to attract investments and ensure economic development. There are two options – either this happens with us or without us. airBaltic presently has no money to implement such projects," Flick said on Lithuania.
