The Port of Riga has significantly increased its volume of transit of raw materials between Russia, Kazakhstan, Europe and USA. The volume of raw materials transhipped by terminals of the Riga Trade Port (RTP) has reached one million tonnes. This fact was celebrated during the official event which took place on 16th of September, at the RTP territory.

Owing to capacity and well-developed infrastructure of RTP terminals, as well as to its collaboration with the multimodal railway operator JSC SRR, the regular and stable transit of containerised cargos and bulk cargoes through the Port of Riga was ensured. As compared with the situation in 2009, the amount of processed bulk cargos was increased multiply during this year, but the amount of processed containerised cargos was increased up to more than 35 percents. This fact certifies that the Port of Riga is a strategically important centre which can ensure international transportation of metallurgical raw materials (iron ore and its products) from Russia and Kazakhstan to the markets of Europe and USA, informed BC marketing and PR manager at Riga Trade Port LLC Kristine Vizule.

The celebration event was attended by representatives from the Board of Free Port of Riga, representatives from the State-owned JSC Latvijas dzelzceļš as well as from the Latvian Ministry of Transport and from the consular office of Kazakhstan in Latvia.

In the year 2009 the amount of containerised cargo transportations performed by SRR has exceeded 10 000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). The company’s operation al movement involves more than 1200 railway cargo containers. SRR is the operator of Eurasia-1 and Eurasia-2 container trains that are used in order to ensure transportation linkage between the Port of Riga and the main destinations in Central Asia countries.

The RTP is the most important asset investor, developer and operator for the companies that offer various transportation services in Latvia. The RTP consists of four business units. These units offer various services that include operation of the Port terminals, railway transportation and expedition of cargos, as well as management of the Port infrastructure and engineering communications.
