“Railways with European rail width have to reach from Poland’s Western border to the Baltic Sea,” Ilves said at the meeting with the Polish leader. “It will take away the status of a dead end from us, where one cannot go to or from where one cannot get away.”
Ilves noted that today’s connection corridors that pass through the three Baltic States and Poland are at the level of Europe of the Cold War period, writes LETA.
“Also Via Baltica has gotten stalled. I expect from all states dedication on that project and progress with it. When we speak of Via Baltica, we aren’t talking just about the physical possibilities of transport but much more,” he said.
Ilves discussed with Barroso how to reach a situation where we would be connected with the heart of Europe from Portugal in the South to Estonia in the North the same way.
“Estonia is one of the best politically integrated European Union states but not economically integrated yet. We need both connection support as well as regional cooperation to build transport and energy connection paths with the rest of the European Union,” said Ilves.
