Lake Peipsi.

Tartu’s deputy mayor Margus Hanson said that the cooperation project won’t aim to launch a regular ship route between Tartu and Pskov but cruise ship traffic and hobby shipping.

Interior ministry regional development chief specialist Silja Sorgus said that compiling the project is in the initial stages but the ultimate aim is to restore shipping traffic between Pskov and Tartu and prepare for opening a waterway between Gulf of Finland and Lake Peipsi. This would have to cover solutions of how to travel up the Narva River. Also, modernising several small ports of Lake Peipsi is in the plans.

Preparations are under way for asking support from the Estonian-Latvian-Russian programme to support shipping traffic in Lake Peipsi.

The plan is to start with work next autumn and complete it in 2014.
