Flight restrictions due to the recent volcanic activity in Iceland have caused the national airline airBaltic a loss of LVL 2.5 million altogether, as the airline's president Bertolt Flick said in a television interview on June 11.

Flick said he believed that the decisions on flight cancellations due to volcanic ash should be left up to carriers, not other institutions.

This loss notwithstanding, airBaltic hopes to conclude this year with a profit, Flick said.

airBaltic announced previously that its passenger turnover in the first five months this year was 1,131,503 passengers – 19% more than in the same period last year, writes LETA.

airBaltic passenger turnover in April decreased 3% from April 2009 as a result of the aviation crisis caused by the volcanic ash.
