President of Russia Dmitri Medvedev signed a law which waived visas for residents of Estonia and of Latvia who have no citizenship but who used to be Soviet citizens.

According to Reuters/LETA, former Soviet citizens residing in Estonia are able to enter Russia without a visa with an Alien’s passport issued by Estonia.

Minister of foreign affairs Urmas Paet commented that Moscow’s decision unfortunately confirms the hypocritical nature of Russia’s policy.

“For the past 17 years Russia has criticised Estonia on every opportunity for the excessive slowness of the naturalisation process, but with this decision Russia actually decelerates granting of citizenship as it takes away an important motivational aspect for applying for Estonian citizenship,” said Paet. He concluded that hence Russia acts contrary to its statements made thus far.
