Volume of cargo transported by rail in Latvia increased 11.1% in first five months of 2008

Print versionIn the first five months of the year 2008, 22.29 million tons of cargo were transported by rail, an increase of 11.1%, compared to the respective period of time last year, according to Transport Ministry's calculations.
The volume of national cargo carried by rail has decreased by 3.4% – to 651,800 tons, whereas the volume of international transportation of cargo by rail increased 11.5% and reached 22.64 million tons, writes LETA.
Export freight haulage has increased by 51% this year reaching 549.800 tons, whereas the volume of import freights decreased by 9.5% and reached 1.95 million tons.
The total freight haulage accounted for 20.14 million tons of freight, an increase of 13.3% on the respective period of time in 2007. The volume of transit through ports increased 14.1% and amounted to 17.96 million tons.
In the first five months' time the volume of overland transit increased by 7.1% and reached 2.18 million tons.
