Higher import tax jams Eesti Post with pile of packages

Estonian state-owned postal company Eesti Post announced on Tuesday that due to several factors, it received several times more packages from countries outside the EU than usual at the end of last year and is now jammed up, causing delays in delivery, Äripäev.ee/LETA reports.

“Naturally this is connected to the changed import tax rates too,” said Eesti Post AS board member Aavo Kärmas about the effect the January 1 increase of the import tax rate of packages has had on the situation.

He said that people all wanted to send their packages before the tax was increased but there was Christmas also and Eesti Post cannot be responsible for how postal channels of other states operate.

Eesti Post’s customs terminal has received a lot of packages in the past days that would normally have been in Estonia already in the middle or end of December. Most likely the reason is that Christmas and New Year’s were on business days and international transport didn’t operate as usual.

While usually the customs terminal receives around 1,000 packages a month, in the first three days of this year it has received already about that amount. There are packages there that were mailed from the USA in November already for example, Eesti Post said.
