Lithuania's air navigation service provider: aviation crisis is deepening

BC, Vilnius, 04.09.2020.Print version
Flight numbers continued to grow in August, which is a busy month for the aviation sector, but the total number of August 2020 flights in Lithuania's airspace, dropped 56% to almost 12,000, compared to August 2019, informs LETA/BNS.

Meanwhile, the number of transit flight went down by 60% to 8,300, Oro Navigacija (Air Navigation), Lithuania's air navigation service provider, said. Its acting CEO Marius Beliunas says the aviation crisis is deepening for now.

"Summer seasons have always reached peak levels and airspace load has been the highest. But COVID-19 has changed everything and despite the fact that EUROCONTROL figures show Lithuania's airspace has been least-affected, this summer season was fairly cold for us. Even looking into the improved figures for the past several months, the whole aviation sector is stagnating," Beliunas said in a statement.

The largest number of transit flights over Lithuania in August was to Russia (3210), followed by Germany (958) and Latvia (500).
