Lithuania's air navigation service provider registered an increase in air traffic in July 2020 compared with June, but says it will take several years for flight numbers to return to last year's level, informs LETA/BNS.

The number of flights handled in Lithuanian airspace totaled 9,830 last months, down 64 percent from July 2019, Oro Navigacija (Air Navigation) said on Monday.

The number of transit flights alone slumped down by 68 percent to 6,760.

"Air traffic grew in July, as expected, but July and August have always been the peak period in our country in terms of both flight and passenger numbers," Marius Beliunas, the company's CEO, said in a press release.

The latest Eurocontrol figures show that the number of flights in the world reached 48.4 percent of the 2019 level. However, many experts predict that air travel will not return to the 2019 level until 2024, he noted.

The largest number of transit flights over Lithuania in July was to Russia, at 2,436. Germany was in second place with 848, and Latvia was at number three with 502 flights.

The most popular flight routes operated from Vilnius were to Riga (a half of pre-crisis flights relaunched), Warsaw (one-third) and London (a half).
