Cargo turnover at Klaipeda port declined by 7.5% in January-April

The Lithuanian seaport of Klaipeda handled 14.7 million tons of cargo in January-April 2020, a decline of 7.5% year-on-year, the port authority has told LETA/BNS.

Liquid cargo volumes fell by 8.1% to 2.989 million tons, bulk cargo volumes edged down by 0.9% to 6.853 million tons, and general cargo volumes plunged by 15% to 4.81 million tons.    


The total number of ship calls in Klaipeda decreased by 6.1% to 2,098 and passenger numbers slumped down by 22.8% to 51,900 passengers.


Annual cargo traffic via Klaipeda edged down by 0.6% in 2019 from 2018 to 46.3 million tons. 


Orlen Lietuva's Butinge crude terminal handled 2.567 million tons of oil in January-April, 2020, down 13.5% year-on-year. The terminal handled 9.541 million tons of crude oil in the full year 2019, down 1.2% from 2018.


Orlen Lietuva, the Lithuanian unit of Poland's Orlen, has been importing crude oil via Butinge solely for its own needs since mid-2006.
