Ventspils port restricts traffic of large ships due to strong wind

BC, Riga, 02.01.2019.Print version
Traffic of large ships in Latvia’s northwestern port of Ventspils is restricted on Wednesday due to a strong gusty wind, the port’s spokeswoman Inga Ievina told LETA.

She said that already on Tuesday large ships neither departed from nor arrived at the port.

Current weather forecasts suggest that the traffic of large ships will not be resumed tonight. Meanwhile, other operations, including cargo handling, continue in the port as usual.

Inga Sabovica, a representative of the Freeport of Riga Authority, said that the port’s duty is to provide tugboat services to all ships that need them. The Freeport of Riga is not closed and there are no plans to close it. Ship traffic continues as usual, the spokeswoman said.

As reported, wind gusts up to 29 meters per second were recorded in the southwestern Latvian port of Liepaja this morning and a very strong north wind was blowing along the western Latvian seacoast on Wednesday.
