Tallinn public transport co TLT to buy renewable energy for EUR 1.5 mln

BC, Tallinn, 27.11.2018.Print version
The Tallinn public transport company Tallinna Linnatranspordi AS (TLT) has announced a public procurement for the purchase of over 25 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy and nearly a mln cubic meters of natural gas for 1.5 mln euros, informed LETA/BNS.

So far, TLT has been using up to 6.4 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity to power its streetcars and trolleybuses, accounting for over a quarter of the electricity used by the company, TLT announced.

Deniss Borodits, chairman of the management board of TLT, said that the company has a long-term plan of increasing the environmental friendliness of public transportation.

"Switching to green energy is the first step in decreasing the company's ecological footprint. The next step is to replace most of diesel fuel with domestic biogas. For that we will purchase 300 new natural gas powered buses in the coming years.

A total of 70 streetcars and 51 trolleybuses powered by green electricity will be servicing Tallinn, which are predicted to carry up to 40 mln passengers. Switching to renewable electricity will decrease impact on the environment as 22,000 fewer tons of carbon dioxide will be emitted, TLT said.

Tenders are to be submitted by Dec. 27. The estimated value of the one-year contract to be awarded is 1.5 mln euros.
