Lithuania's presidential office suggests looking for options for leaders' flights

Lithuania's presidential office on Tuesday suggested "looking for other options" to ensure state leaders' flights after a military Spartan state leaders use broke down twice over the past several days, informed LETA/BNS.

The statement comes after President Dalia Grybauskaite could not fly to Riga on Sunday to attend the commemoration of Latvia's 100th independence anniversary due to the Spartan's altitude system failure.


The plane was fixed and took Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis to Brussels on Monday but then broke down again and the prime minister was not able to fly back. "The Spartan has broken down often recently, therefore, it would be reasonable to look for other options useful for both the army and state leaders' flights," the presidential press service told.


The prime minister said on Tuesday that Lithuania needs a plane for state leaders or other delegations as it's no longer safe to use military aircraft that breaks down so often.


The Ministry of National Defense says it's been looking for options to acquire or lease a plane "for quite some time already".


The Lithuanian army has three Spartan transporters, with one of them still under repay following a failure last year.
