Riga chief architect suggests ferry traffic due to congested bridges over River Daugava

Due to the congested bridges over the River Daugava, Riga should consider developing water transport for crossing the river, Riga City Architect Gvido Princis says in an interview with the Neatkariga Rita Avize newspaper, cites LETA.

"At the moment, when there are no new bridges being built but the existing bridges are congested, we have to look for short-term solutions. Ferry and boat traffic may be the fastest and most flexible solution," believes Princis. Water transport from one bank to the other to the north of Vansu (Suspension) Bridge could turn out to be a rather economic solution, says Princis.

In the meantime, the plans to make Daugava Embankment more accessible to pedestrians, which Princis believes to have a great potential, have got stuck in legal complexities. "Rigans and guests of the city have seen that we know how to use this area to great effect, and we can probably do even better," says Princis.

The problem is that part of freight transport going to the port has to cross the embankment. According to Princis, there are alternatives - a tunnel or a bypass for trucks driving to the port. Princis would support any of these alternatives in order to reduce the area taken up by motor vehicles.
