Rail freight in Latvia down 2.8% in 9 months

Freight transportation using the Latvian railway infrastructure amounted to 33.314 million tons in the first nine months of this year, down 2.8% from the same period in 2016, the data of the Transport Ministry shows, cites LETA.
International cargo shipments by rail in the first nine months of the year
was at 32.081 million tons, down 3.1% from the nine months of 2016, while
domestic shipments rose 7.5% to 1.233 million tons.
Transit cargo carried by rail was at 29.528 million tons in the first nine
months of the year, or 1% more than a year ago. Import cargo carried by rail
was at 2.302 million tons (down by 23.7%), while export cargo was at 250,700
tons (3.4 times reduction).
Shipping of rail cargo via Latvian ports declined 3.5% year-on-year to
27.036 million tons, while deliveries of transit cargo by land grew twice to
2.492 million tons.
A total of 34.262 million tons of freight were shipped by rail in Latvia in
the nine months of 2016.
