Freight flows of Estonian Railways drop by 6.2% in H1

Altogether 6.3 million tons of freight was transported on the infrastructure of the state-owned Estonian railway infrastructure company Estonian Railways in the first six months of 2017, 6.2% less than in the same period last year, cites LETA/BNS.

In June, the company carried 880,000 tons of goods, spokespeople for Estonian Railways (Eesti Raudtee) said.

 

Fertilizers were the leading category of commodities in the first half-year with 2.2 million tons handled in the six-month period, 12.4% more than in the same period last year. The carriage of oil products fell 43% year-on-year to 1.4 million tons. Oil shale carriage grew 23.3% to 1.2 million tons and the carriage of chemical products increased 12.5% to 530,000 tons.

 

Container carriage fell 15.2% on year to 15,900 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).

 

Transit shipments declined 15.8% to 3.9 million tons. Local shipments meanwhile grew 30% to 1.6 million tons. Freight carriage of import shipments fell 8.7% to 620,000, while the carriage of export shipments remained on the same level as last year, totaling 100,000 tons.
