Latvia’s state-owned railway company Latvijas Dzelzcels and its subsidiary LDz Logistika this week went on a visit to India to meet business representatives and discuss cooperation opportunities in cargo transportation, the company reported.

The company’s representatives will participate in international transport logistics and communications fair with about 500 organizations from 25 countries of the world.

According to Latvijas Dzelzcels, the head of the Indian Institute of Logistics during the meeting with Latvijas Dzelzcels president Edvins Berzins praised the goal of the Latvian railway company to expand Latvia’s transit geography, looking for cooperation opportunities with India’s partners.

He said that in the past year the Indian government has approved private business development program that should promote development of transport logistics companies in cargo transportation to Europe. Both officials agreed that the mutual relations are at an initial stage, but there is huge potential for serious and sustainable cooperation.

"India is playing a larger role in the world’s economy, it is looking for new markets and becoming interesting for transportation companies. Therefore we are working on opportunities to develop new routes because cargo flow from India to Europe goes through Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, Georgia, Belarus. We are ready to expand this logistics chain and ensure further movement of cargos to northern Europe," said Berzins.

Work on these transit corridors is one of priorities for LDz Logistika.

Berzins also met with representatives of the Indian Transport and Shipping Ministry and head of the Indian railway company to discuss further cooperation.

Berzins is also the vice president of Latvia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, therefore during the visit he signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).
