Low sea levels hamper ferry traffic to Hiiumaa

BC, Tallinn, 21.10.2016.Print version
In the coming weekend sea levels are forecast to drop as much as 74 centimeters below the Kronstadt mean sea level, the local benchmark for the eastern Baltic Sea, which means that ferry traffic between the mainland and Hiiumaa island will continue to be affected, the operator of the ferries said LETA/BNS on Friday.

The operator, TS Laevad, issued a recommendation for motorists not having a booking for their vehicle to leave the vehicle in port.

Spokespeople for TS Laevad said a decline in sea levels is expected to continue and traffic on the Hiiumaa route that has a very low navigable channel will continue to be affected substantially. The ferries Regula and St.Ola have been idle for all of Friday and in great probability will not be able to sail the whole weekend.

The ferries Harilaid and Korgelaid were scheduled to depart from Rohukula on the mainland at about 4:15, 5:05, 7:55, 8:35 and 11:35 p.m. on Friday and from Heltermaa at about 6:05, 6:50, 9:45 and 10:30 p.m., with the times subject to change depending on weather.

The number of car places booked for the Rohukula-Heltermaa crossings is already so big that accommodating a significantly bigger number of vehicles is unlikely given the low water level. As a result, the operator has requested motorists with no booking for their vehicle to either change their plans for the weekend or make the crossing without the vehicle.

It added that no refund fee will be charged on the tickets returned because of adverse weather conditions.
