Rail Baltic to look for best solution for building Estonia's Muuga terminal

BC, Tallinn, 30.08.2016.Print version
Rail Baltic Estonia OU is to look for the best solution to build a multimodal goods terminal at Muuga port, the aim of which is to service goods transported to the terminal on the Rail Baltic high-speed railway, reports LETA/BNS.

Rail Baltic announced a tender to find the most cost-effective and realistic solution. An analysis should find out what are two alternative solutions for the terminal's location, technical ability and functionality, it is written in the tender announcement.

A multimodal terminal is a building, construction or a complex which services with different means of transportation, including with road, railway and sea transport vehicles.

The first scenario includes joining Rail Baltic railway with a gauge width of 1,435 mm with the 1,520 mm railway on the territory of Muuga port, which would result in major changes in the existing logistics solutions.

According to the second scenario the whole infrastructure of the port would be reconstructed.

Muuga port is Estonia's biggest cargo port which is specialized on transit goods. Rail Baltic OU is a company which coordinates creating the railway on the Estonian side.
