Sales revenue of the Finnish shipping group Viking Line in the first half of 2016 declined to 238 mln euros from 239 mln euros earned in the same period a year before.

Operating loss increased from 7.6 mln to 10.5 mln euros, while consolidated loss before taxes grew from 7.7 mln to 11.6 mln euros and loss after taxes from 5.7 mln to 8.9 mln euros, the company told the Helsinki stock exchange.

Passenger-related revenue grew 0.6% to 214 mln euros, while cargo revenue fell 7.2% on year to 22.5 mln euros.

Competition in Viking Line's service area means there is greater pressure on prices as well as volumes, the company's management said. Low fuel prices had a positive impact on the company's earnings. According to the management, the company's operating profit is to be smaller this year than in 2015.

Since a Finnish court in August rejected Viking Line's claim against the Republic of Finland regarding fairway charges levied during in 2001–2004, the company is considering filing an appeal with the Supreme Court of Finland.
