Edelaraudtee sells old diesel train to Tajikistan via Lithuania

BC, Tallinn, 16.08.2016.Print version
The private company AS Edelaraudtee that discontinued operating domestic non-electric passenger train services in Estonia in 2014 has sold one of its old diesel trains to a Lithuanian company that is about to deliver it to a buyer in Tajikistan, informs BNS/LETA.

"A Lithuanian company bought it, but as far as we know it will move on to Tajikistan," told a spokesman for Go Group, Marko Paloveer. Even though Edelaraudtee has not been informed on what will happen to the train, it will probably be used in passenger service.

The spokesman added that companies from the Central Asia region have inquired about the availability of second hand trains in Europe earlier too.

Edelaraudtee will not disclose the price at which the train changed hands. Paloveer said that since the company wishes to sell more similar trains, the price cannot be made public.

The spokesman was unable to say whether or not the Lithuanian company could be interested in buying more such trains.

"Should there be interest, Go Group definitely has things to sell," he said.

Paloveer added that inquiries about the Edelaraudtee trains standing idle were made from time to time and that everything depends on negotiations.

With the exception of the one train sold to Kazakhstan earlier, no more old diesel powered trains of Edelaraudtee have found a buyer since the company stopped operating domestic services in 2014.

Upon the arrival in Estonia of brand new Stadler electric and diesel trains acquired with EU support, the contract to operate subsidized domestic train services was awarded exclusively to the state-owned Eesti Liinirongid AS operating under the Elron business name.

The exact number of old diesel trains in the idle fleet of Edelaraudtee is not known.
