Cargo turnover of Baltic ports drops 6.2% in H1

All Baltic ports together handled 73.273 mln tons of cargo in the first six months of 2016, which is by 4.81 mln tons or 6.2% less than during the same period in 2015, the Latvian national statistics office reported LETA.

Of all cargos reloaded at the Baltic ports in January-June this year, 43.3% were handled at Latvian ports, 33.3% at Lithuanian ports and 23.4% at Estonian ports.

 

Compared to the first six months of last year, cargo handling rose at the Lithuanian ports but dropped in Latvia and Estonia in the first half of this year.

 

Cargo handling at Latvian ports fell 15.1% or 5.66 mln tons year-on-year to 31.756 mln tons. Cargo handling at Lithuanian ports picked up 10% or 2.221 mln tons year-on-year to 24.407 mln tons, while Estonian ports reloaded 17.11 mln tons, down 7.4% or 1.371 mln tons from the first six months of 2015.

 

Lithuania's Klaipeda port led other Baltic ports by cargo turnover in the first six months of this year, having reloaded 19.937 mln tons, up 5.7% year-on-year. Latvia's Riga port came second with 18.265 mln tons handled in January-June 2016, down 11.5% from the same period last year. Estonia's Tallinn port was third with 10.704 mln tons handled in the first six months of 2016, down 11.4% from the same period in 2015.
