Rail Baltica expected to carry 16 mln tons of goods annually

Rail Baltica has the potential to carry 5 million passengers and 16 million tons of goods annually in the future, says Baiba Rubesa, CEO of the RB Rail joint venture that coordinates the European standard-gauge railway project in the three states, informs LETA.

According to Rubesa, Rail Baltica is for Europe a high-priority project that will provide the essential missing links in the continent's railway network. "It's the biggest infrastructure cooperation project of the Baltic countries in this century, which will enable us to transport five million passengers and 16 million tons of goods annually," she said at a Rail Baltica-themed discussion at the Estonian port of Muuga.

CEO of Estonia's state-owned Port of Tallinn Valdo Kalm said that while support for the project with regard to passenger carriage is strong in all three Baltic States they are more skeptical about the carriage of goods. "At the same time Finland already sees the necessity of and the opportunities offered by Rail Baltica for itself. It can also be seen already that Estonian entrepreneurs too are increasingly perceiving the potential of Muuga's multimodal goods terminal in combination with the [Finnish] Vuosaari container terminal," he said.

Businesspeople interested in the Rail Baltica project gathered at the port of Muuga on Tuesday for a meeting of the non-profit Rail Baltica Business Network at which further development of the railway project and business opportunities connected with the future Rail Baltica goods terminal at Muuga were under discussion.
