BC, Riga, 06.04.2016.Print version
The number of ships served by the Riga Freeport in March 2016 dropped by 5.9% year-on-year, the company said LETA.

In March, 844 ships departed the Riga port. There was a 8.9% growth in the segment of passenger ships and ferries, including cruise ships, and a 5.7% growth in the container ship segment. In March, the port served 381 dry cargo ships, 173 tankers, 138 container ships, 84 bulk carriers and 49 passenger ships.

The port’s board chairman Andris Ameriks (Honor To Serve Riga) explained that Russian business representatives have diverted some of the cargoes from the Riga port to Russian ports. The port has planned a 10% drop in cargos in its budget this year.

Ameriks also said that the problem should be solved jointly with all Latvian ports, Latvijas Dzelzcels railway company, the Transport Ministry and the prime minister as the cargo transportation sector ensures a considerable impact on the country’s economy.
