BC, Riga, 11.02.2016.Print version
Cargo turnover at the Freeport of Riga totaled 3.27 million tons in January 2016, which is a reduction by 6.8% or 238,00 tons from January 2015, informs LETA, according to the port's information.

Despite the reduction year-on-year, the cargo turnover in January 2015 is consistent with the average figure for January in the last five years which is 3.25 million tons.

The port's board chairman and the Vice-Mayor of Riga, Andris Ameriks, said the port's operations were still affected by consequences of geopolitical events.

Taking into consideration the possible impact of the EU and Russian sanctions on cargo handling, the port this year has planned a 10% decrease in cargo turnover and, consequently, a 8-9% reduction in revenue compared to 2015.

The decline in cargo turnover notwithstanding, the Riga has kept the status of the leading port in the Baltic States, the port stated.

In January 2016, the port saw a decrease in handling of all types of cargo compared to January 2015. Bulk cargoes were reloaded in the amount of 1.98 million tons, down 3.4% year-on-year, liquid cargoes accounted for 871,900 tons or 6.2% less than in January 2015, and handling of general cargoes shrank 21.1% to 412,200 tons.
