Lithuania cautious about connecting Viking to new Silk Road

Ukraine, a member of Viking container shuttle train project, has launched a new Silk Road to China bypassing Russia and invites the Lithuanians to use this route for freight transportation to Asia. However, Lithuania is cautious about this idea, the Verslo Zinios business daily reports on Tuesday, cites LETA/BNS.

“The whole chain goes through various transport interconnections: in addition to railways, this process also involves ports. It’s possible to transport freight, but the price is very important. Bigger freight flows would ensure a better price, they would also make it possible to invest in the development of the required infrastructure,” Stasys Dailydka, CEO of Lithuania’s railway operator Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways), told the daily.

Meanwhile, Stasys Gudvalis, director of the Freight Transportation Directorate at Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai, is sure that the railway route to Asia skirting Russia should be the most attractive to the companies transporting food. Other goods would be transported via Russia as that route was shorter and cheaper, he said.
