Freight flows of Estonian railways drop by 20% in 2015

Altogether 15.4 million tons of freight was carried on the infrastructure of the state-owned Estonian railway infrastructure company Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railways) in 2015, 20.2% less than in 2014, informs LETA/BNS.

Of oil and oil products 7.49 million tons was shipped in the 12 months, 24% less than in the previous year. Shipment of fertilizers, which occupied the second place overall, grew 11.2% to 3.7 million tons.

 

Oil shale shipments dropped 37% to 1.7 million tons and shipments of chemical goods fell 15.2% to 1.05 million tons.

 

Transit shipments fell 20% to 11.3 million tons, accounting for 73.4% of total shipments.


Local shipments were down 27.4% at 2.5 million tons. The only category of shipments to see an increase was import shipments, which surged 22.3% to 1.3 million tons. Export shipments meanwhile more than halved to 290,000 tons.

 

The biggest amount of goods was brought to Estonia from Russia –- 9.6 million tons in total, which is 5.1% less than in 2014. Loading of goods onto railway transport in Estonia, for both domestic and export shipment, fell 31.8% to 3.2 million tons. Loading of cargoes in Belarus for shipment to Estonia came to 1.02 million tons, marking an increase of 69%. Shipments from Lithuania grew by 73% to 640,000 tons. Substantial reductions were registered in shipments from Kazakhstan and Latvia.

 

Container shipments fell 41% year on year to 42,996 TEU.

 

Of operators, EVR Cargo carried 11.6 million tons during the year, 26.6% less than the year before. The amount shipped by AS E.R.S. was 3.8 million tons, 9% more than in 2014.
