A total of 19,441 new cars were registered in Lithuania in 2015, a rise of 18% from the previous year, Autotyrimai said on Monday, writes LETA/BNS.

In December alone, new car registrations jumped by an annual 21% to 1,426 units, the market research company said, based on data from the state car registration company Regitra.

"Re-exports remain among the important factors that are driving growth in the market: 165 of the new cars registered in December, including 128 Fiats, were removed from the register by the end of the month and at least 11 more will be deregistered shortly," it said in a press release.

Volkswagen last month held onto its number one position in Lithuania's new car market with 288 new cars registered, followed by Fiat in second position with 157 and Toyota in third with 152 registrations.

Mercedes-Benz ranked first in the premium car segment with 18 registrations.
