Azerbaijan plans to join Viking container train project

BC, Vilnius, 11.11.2015.Print version
Azerbaijan plans to join the Viking container shuttle train project, the Lithuanian Transport Ministry said on November 11th, informs LETA/BNS.

"Azerbaijan Railways' involvement in the project will help extend the route of the container train to more distant Asian countries and reach Kazakhstan and China via an alternative route," Deputy Transport Minister Saulius Girdauskas said in a press release.

The ministry in late September sent an official invitation to Azerbaijan's Transport Ministry to join the Viking project.

It is expected that once Azerbaijan Railways joins the project, more freight will be shipped to Lithuania from Kazakhstan and China and that the new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will be used to transport containers from Turkey to Ukrainian ports.

The Viking shuttle train carried nearly 19,500 TEU containers in the first half of this year, a rise of 2% year-on-year.
