Cargo handling in the Eastern Coast Baltic Seaports in January-August decreased by 0.6%

In January-August 2015, the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports totalled 244 582,3 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is -0.6% or -1 553,9 thou. tn, reports BC Klaipeda port’s press service.

UST-LUGA PORT is the priority project related with cargo handling capacity development of Russian ports in the Baltic Sea region. In January – August of 2015 the cargo handling throughput in the Port increased as many as by 7,68 mln tn or by 15,5% to  57,12 mln tn comparing with January – August of 2014.

 

Oil products, crude oil and coal constitute even 90% of overall Seaport cargo handling turnover:


- 20,1 mln tn of oil products were handled, +19,3% or + 3,25 mln yoy;

- 17,5 mln  tn of crude oil were handled, +14,1% or + 2,16 mln tn yoy;

- 13,8 mln tn of coal were handled, +10,5% or +1,32 mln tn yoy.


Other categories of cargo that made the impact on the overall cargo handling turnover in the Seaport were as follows:

 

- Ro-Ro cargoes 1 424,1 thou. tn were handled, +33,3% or +356,0 thou. tn yoy;

- liquid natural gas – 904,0 thou. tn were handled, +18,6% or +141,9 thou. tn yoy;

- metal – 369,1 thou. tn were handled, more by 9 times or by 330,9 thou. tn yoy.

 

Other categories of cargo with decreased handling rates were as follows:

 

- containerised cargoes – 518,6 thou. tn were handled, -9,8% or -56,3 thou. tn yoy;

 

Altogether 38,80 mln tn of products, i.e. more by 4,0% or by 1,5 mln tn were handled in  PRIMORSK PORT in January – August of 2015.

 

 Primorsk Port is the centre of Russian crude oil and oil products export:


- 29,13 mln tn of crude oil were handled, -2,1 % or -627,9 thou. tn yoy;

- 9,67 mln tn oil products were handled,  +28,3% or +2 131,7 thou. tn  yoy.  

 

In January – August of 2015 the SEAPORT of SAINT - PETERSBURG handled 34,73 mln tn  of cargo, i.e., less  by 15,5% or by 6,38 mln tn than within the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Basic categories of cargo that made the most significant impact on cargo handling results in January – August of 2015 were as follows: 


- containerised cargoes – 13,40 mln tn were handled, -15,8% or -2,5 mln tn yoy;

- oil products – 6,41 mln tn were handled, -33,0% or -3,2 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 5,32 mln tn were handled, +6,4% or +319,2 thou. tn yoy;

- metal – 4,27 mln tn were handled, +9,1% or +357,7 thou. tn yoy;

- scrap metal –1,36 mln tn were handled, -16,4% or -267,3 thou. tn yoy.


Within the period of January – August of 2015 Klaipeda Seaport cargo handling turnover increased by 9,0% to  25,37 mln tn, i.e.  more by 2,1 mln tn comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Year-on-year changes of overall turnover  in January - July of 2015 according to cargo types:

 

- Liquid cargo – 7 070,5  thou tn were handled, +41,4% or +2 069,3 thou. tn yoy;

- General cargo – 7 389,8 thou. tn were handled, -2,3% or -175,4 thou. tn yoy;

- Dry and bulk cargo – 10 909,9 thou. tn were handled, +1,9% or  +207,7 thou. tn yoy

4 463 vessels were reported to call Klaipeda Seaport in January – July of 2015, i.e. more by 2,1% or by 91 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of 2014. 

 

Cruise shipping. In May – August of 2015 Klaipeda Seaport received 42 vessels with 50 328 passengers on board.

 

In January – August of 2015 the growth of cargo handling turnover by 0,3% was achieved in the FREEPORT OF RIGA – altogether  26,75 mln tn were handled ( the yoy change was  +84,7thou. tn ).


Such a significant growth was achieved due to dynamics of basic cargo categories:


- the most abundant cargo of the Seaport is coal. 9,86 mln tn were handled (+0,3% or +25,3 thou. tn yoy);

- oil products – 7,26 mln tn were handled (+8,3% or +553,8 thou. tn yoy);

- fertilizers – 1,59 mln tn were handled (+8,5% or +135,0 thou. tn yoy).

 

The reason of such a robust growth of handling volumes of fertilizers was the intensification of  handling operations at the  new Riga Fertilizer Terminal (the joint project of the Freeport of Riga Port and Uralchem). 


Other categories of cargo with decreased handling rates were as follows:


- containerised cargoes – 2,55 mln tn were handled (-3,9% or -103,3 thou. tn yoy);

 

- timber – 1,92 mln tn were handled (-4,2% or -84,2 thou. tn yoy).


Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 375,501  thou. passengers in January – August of 2015, i.e., less by 35,2% or by 203,8 thou passengers comparing with January – August of 2014.  

 

In January – August of 2015 the cargo handling turnover in the SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS comparing with the corresponding period of 2014 dropped down to 16,39 mln tn , i.e., less by 13,5% or by 2,56 mln tn .

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – July of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 10 260,0 thou. tn were handled, -4,5% or -487,0 thou. tn yoy;

- coal – 3 536,0 thou. tn were handled, -23,6% or -1 090,0 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 1 179,0 thou. tn were handled, -3,9% or -48,0 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 142,0 thou. tn were handled, -89,0% or -1 154,0 thou. tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic. Within the analysed period 74 908 passenger called the port of Ventspils, i.e., more by 31,1% or by 17 767 passenger comparing with January – August of 2014.

 

Vessels. In total the Seaport accommodated 940 vessels within the analysed period, the yoy change was -9,8%, or -102 vessels.

 

The overall throughput in the JOINT PORT of TALLINN in January – August of  2015 was 15,22 mln tn, i.e., -21,7% or – 4 211,2 thou. tn comparing with the corresponding period in 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – August of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 9 007,4 thou. tn were handled, -32,4% or -4 310,0 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 2 852,4 thou. tn were handled, +8,2% or +215,4 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes – 1 157,6 thou. tn were handled, -12,9% or -172,1 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 1 120,7 thou. tn were handled, +3,6% or +38,5 thou tn.

 

Passenger traffic. In January – August of 2015 the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 6 850,8 thou. passengers, i.e. more by  1,4% or by 92,8 thou. passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Vessels.  4 794 vessels were reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. more by 2,2% or by 104 vessels  comparing with January – August of 2014.

 

11,70 mln tn of cargo, i.e. less  by 3,0% or by 362,5 thou tn  were handled in  VYSOTSK SEAPORT  in January – August of 2015 comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Only two categories of cargo are handled in this Seaport:


- oil products – 8,16 mln tn were handled, -4,1% or -345,4 thou tn yoy;

- coal – 3,54 mln tn  were handled, -0,5% or -17,1 thou tn yoy.

 

The total throughput in the PORT OF KALININGRAD was 8,50  mln tn,  i.e., less by 5,4% or by 487,0 thou. tn than in January – August of 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – August  of  2015 were as follows:

 

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 1 435,3 thou. tn were handled, +33,8% or +362,5 thou. tn yoy;

- oil products – 1 133,6 thou. tn were handled, -20,0% or -284,1 thou. tn yoy;

- metal – 743,8 thou. tn were handled, +2,8% or +20,4 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes – 579,0 thou. tn were handled, -35,2% or -314,0 thou. tn yoy.

 

The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA in January – August of 2015 was 3,37 mln tn, more by 1,3% or by 42,9 thou. tn comparing the corresponding period  of 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories making the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – August of 2015 were as follows:


- grain – 1 493,7 thou. tn were handled ( the throughput of grain handling accounts  as many as for 44,4% of the overall cargo handling), -4,5% or -70,7 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro – Ro cargoes – 446,1 thou. tn were handled, -15,2% or -80,0 thou. tn yoy;

- timber– 416,1 thou. tn were handled, +18,4% or by +64,6 thou. tn yoy;

- metal – 143,1 thou. tn were handled, more by 6 times or by 122,5 thou. tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic. The number of passengers calling the Port of Liepaja was 29 318  passengers, i.e., more by 0,1% or by 29 passengers comparing with January – August of 2014..

 

Vessels. In January – August of the current year 897 vessels called the Seaport, i.e., less by 2,5% or by 23 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year.
