The information about Russia's plans to halt coal transit through Latvia has not been confirmed, Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma's (Unity) press secretary Aiva Rozenberga told LETA.

This is what the Foreign Ministry told the premier, Rozenberga explained.

As reported, Riga Vice-Mayor Andris Ameriks (Honor to Serve Riga) said in an interview with Latvian Television this morning that, according to unofficial information received Wednesday, Russia could halt coal transit through the Riga Port.

Ameriks said that in case this information turns out to be true, it will have a very negative impact on the Riga Port's performance and Latvia's economy altogether, as Russia's coal shipments make up more than one-third of the entire cargo turnover at the Riga Port.

The Transport Ministry also said it had unofficial information that Russia could halt coal transit through the Riga Port, Transport Minister Anrijs Matiss (Unity) confirmed to LETA.
