Cargo handling in the Eastern Coast Baltic Seaports in January-June decreased by 0.3%

In January-June 2015, the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports totalled 185 389,9 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is -0.3% or -546,4 thou. tn, reports BC Klaipeda port’s press service.

UST-LUGA PORT is the priority project related with cargo handling capacity development of Russian ports in the Baltic Sea region. Cargo handling capacity in January – June of 2015 increased as many as by 5,71 mln tn or by 15,7% to  42,0 mln tn comparing with January – June of 2014.

 

Oil products, crude oil and coal constitute even 91% of overall Seaport cargo handling turnover:


- 14,82 mln tn of oil products were handled, +18,4% or + 2,31 mln yoy;

- 13,40 mln  tn of crude oil were handled, +18,1% or +2,05 mln tn yoy;

- 10,02 mln tn of coal were handled, +13,5% or +1,19 mln  tn yoy.

 

Other categories of cargo that made the impact on overall cargo handling turnover in the Seaport were as follows:

 

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 1 027,2 thou. tn were handled, +23,2% or +193,2 thou. tn yoy; 

- liquefied natural gas – 648,4 thou. tn were handled, +4,1% or +25,7 thou. tn;

- metal – 279,6 thou. tn were handled, more by 63,5 times or by 275,2 thou. tn yoy.


Other categories of cargo with decreased handling rates were as follows:

 

- containerised cargoes – 363,2 thou. tn were handled, –11,4% or –46,8 thou. tn yoy.

 

Altogether 29,80 mln tn of products, i.e. more by 3,9% or by  1,1 mln tn were handled in  PRIMORSK PORT in January – June of 2015.

 

Primorsk Port is the centre of Russian crude oil and oil products export:


- 22,42 mln tn of crude oil were handled, –2,3% or –537,0 thou. tn yoy;

- 7,38 mln tn oil products were handled,  +29,0% or +1 658,9 thou. tn  yoy.  

 

In January – June of 2015 the SEAPORT of SAINT – PETERSBURG handled 26,24 mln tn  of cargo, i.e., less  by 12,1% or by 3,61 mln tn than within the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Basic categories of cargo that made the most significant impact on cargo handling results in January – June of 2015 were as follows: 


- containerised cargoes – 10,0 mln tn were handled, –16,7% or –2,0 mln tn yoy;

- oil products – 5,03 mln tn were handled, –18,6% or –1,15 mln  tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 3,85 mln tn were handled, +8,8% or +312,2 thou. tn yoy;

- metal – 3,38 mln tn were handled, +7,5% or +234,5 thou. tn yoy;

- scrap metal – 1,1 mln tn were handled, –8,9% or –107,7 thou. tn yoy.

 

Within the period of January – June of 2015 Klaipeda Seaport cargo handling turnover increased by 6,2% to  18,86 mln tn, i.e.  more by 1,1 mln tn comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.


Year-on-year changes of overall turnover  in January – June of 2015 according to cargo types:


- Liquid cargo – 5 209,0  thou tn were handled, +40,9% or +1 1511,8 thou. tn yoy;

- General cargo – 5 616,2 thou. tn were handled, –1,4% or –78,2 thou. tn yoy;

- Dry and bulk cargo – 8 031,1 thou. tn were handled, –4,0% or  –334,0 thou. tn yoy

3 271 vessel was reported to call Klaipeda Seaport in January – June of 2015,i.e. the identical number of vessels was recorded in January – June of 2014.


As the dynamics of vessels in Klaipeda Seaport is stable and cargo handling turnover has increased by 1,1 mln tn within the Ist half of the year it is obvious  that the segment of larger vessels continues to increase. Statistical data of the late years proves that the number of gross tonnage vessels calling Klaipeda Seaport has been constantly growing.  382 vessels above 200 metres in length called the Seaport in 2013, in 2014 the number of such type of vessels increased to 465 – even by 21,7%  or by 83 vessels.

 

Cruise shipping. 17 vessels with 24 245 passengers on board called Klaipeda Seaport within the period of the first two months of cruise season.


In January – June of 2015 the growth of cargo handling turnover by 2,3% was achieved in the FREEPORT OF RIGA – altogether  17,28 mln tn were handled ( the yoy change was  +191,5 thou. tn ).


Such a significant growth was achieved due to dynamics of basic cargo categories handled in the Freeport of Riga:


- the most abundant cargo of the Seaport is coal. 7,54 mln tn were handled (+2,6% or +192,5 thou. tn yoy);

- oil products – 5,75 mln tn were handled (+6,4% or +345,4 thou. tn yoy);

- containerised cargoes – 1,93 mln tn were handled (-1,8% or –35,3 thou. tn yoy);

- fertilizers – 1,40 mln  tn were handled (+28,4% or +309,1 thou. tn yoy).

 

The reason of such a robust growth of cargo handling volumes was the intensification of  handling operations at the new Riga Fertilizer Terminal (the joint project of the Freeport of Riga Port and Uralchem). 

 

Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 237,5  thou. passengers in January – June of 2015 (the yoy change was –40,3% or –160,2 thou passengers). 

 

In January – June of 2015 the cargo handling turnover in the SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS comparing with the corresponding period of 2014 dropped down to 13,38 mln tn , i.e.,14,8% or -2,32 mln tn yoy.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – June of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 8 403,0 thou. tn were handled, –6,2% or –559,0,0 thou tn yoy;

- coal – 2 929,0 thou. tn were handled, –24,4% or –943,0 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes –  876,0 thou. tn were handled, –3,1% or –28,0 thou. tn yoy;

- timber – 274,0 thou. tn were handled, –9,3% or –28,0 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 142,0 thou. tn were handled, –87,9% or –1 034,0 thou. tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic. Within the analysed period 42 503 passengers called the port of Ventspils, i.e., more by 38,6% or by 11 834 passengers comparing with January – June of 2014.

 

Vessels. In total the Seaport accommodated 730 vessels, the yoy change was –9,5%, or –77 vessels.

 

The overall throughput in the JOINT PORT of TALLINN in January – June of 2015 was 12,09 mln tn, i.e., –20,7% or – 3 152,4 thou. tn comparing with the corresponding period in 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – June of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 7 370,4 thou. tn were handled, –30,7% or –3 257,9 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 2 151,5 thou. tn were handled, +9,2% or +181,5 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes – 865,66 thou. tn were handled, –13,8% or –138,3 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 829,7 thou. tn were handled, +0,6% or +4,8 thou tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic. In January –June of 2015 the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 4 395,6 thou. passengers, i.e. less by  0,6% or by 26,4 thou. passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Vessels. 3 469 vessels were reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. more by 2,7% or by 92 vessels  comparing with January – June of 2014.

 

8,48 mln tn of cargo, i.e. less  by 3,1% or by 267,3 thou. tn  were handled in  VYSOTSK SEAPORT  in January – June of 2015 comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Only two categories of cargo are handled in this Seaport:


- oil products – 5,87 mln tn were handled, –4,6% or –281,3 thou tn yoy;

- coal – 2,61 mln tn  were handled, +0,5% or +14,0 thou tn yoy.

 

The total throughput in the PORT OF KALININGRAD was 6,43  mln tn,  i.e., less by 4,1% or by 278,0 thou. tn than in January – June of 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – June  of  2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 1 025,8 thou. tn were handled, –18,5% or –232,5 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 917,0 thou. tn were handled, +42,8% or +274,8 thou. tn yoy;

- metal – 567,6 thou. tn were handled, +0,9% or +5,2 thou. tn;

- grain – 453,6 thou. tn were handled, +51,0% or +153,3 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes – 397,1 thou. tn were handled, –39,4% or –257,7 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes (TEU) –73 557 TEU were handled, –59,1% or –106 248 TEU yoy.

 

The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA in January – June of 2015 was 2 697,3 thou. tn, more by  0,8 % or by 21,6 thou. tn  comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories making the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – June  of 2015 were as follows:


- grain – 1 283,1 thou. tn were handled ( the throughput of grain handling accounts  as many as for 47,6% of the overall cargo handling), the yoy change  was –6,2% or –85,0 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro – Ro cargoes – 345,9 thou. tn were handled, –9,7% or –37,1 thou. tn yoy;

- timber– 323,5 thou. tn were handled, +25,5% or by +65,8 thou. tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic. The number of passengers calling the Port of Liepaja was 19 523  passengers, i.e., less by 1,3% or by 255 passengers yoy.

 

Vessels. In January – June of the current year 690 vessels called the Seaport, i.e., less by 4,3% or by 31 vessel comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year.
