Cargo handling in the Eastern Coast Baltic Seaports in January – May decreased by 0.1%

In January-May 2015, the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports totalled 155 316,1 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is -0.1% or -207,1 thou. tn, reports BC Klaipeda port’s press service.

UST-LUGA PORT is the priority project related with cargo handling capacity development of Russian ports in the Baltic Sea region. Cargo handling capacity in January – May of 2015 increased as many as by 5,47 mln tn or by 18,2% to  35,56 mln tn comparing with January – May of 2014.

 

Oil products, crude oil and coal constitute even 91% of overall Seaport cargo handling turnover:


- 12,52 mln tn of oil products were transhiped, +22,2% or + 2,28 mln yoy;

- 11,40 mln  tn of crude oil were transhiped, +18,6% or +1,78 mln tn yoy;

- 8,54 mln tn of coal were handled, +16,6% or +1,22 mln  tn yoy.


Other categories of cargo that made the impact on overall cargo handling turnover in the Seaport were as follows:

 

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 833,9 thou. tn were handled, +20,4% or +141,5 thou. tn yoy; 

- metal – 279,6 thou. tn were handled, more by 63,5 times or by 275,2 thou. tn yoy.


Other categories of cargo with decreased handling rates were as follows:


- liquid natural gas – 526,2 thou. tn were transhiped, -1,7% or -9,2 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes – 295,7 thou. tn were handled, -9,3% or -30,3 thou. tn yoy;

 

Altogether 24,52 mln tn of products, i.e. more by 1,8% or by 422,9 thou.tn were handled in  PRIMORSK PORT in January – May of 2015.

 

 Primorsk Port is the centre of Russian crude oil and oil products export:


- 18,42 mln tn of crude oil were transhiped, -4,8% or -920,3 thou. tn yoy;

- 6,10 mln tn oil products were transhipped,  +28,2% or +1 343,2 thou. tn  yoy.  


In January – May of 2015 the SEAPORT of SAINT - PETERSBURG handled 21,71 mln tn  of cargo, i.e., less  by 11,6% or by 2,86 mln tn than within the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Basic categories of cargo that made the most significant impact on cargo handling results in January – May of 2015 were as follows: 


- containerised cargoes – 8,33 mln tn were handled, -17,0% or -1 705,4 thou. tn yoy;

- oil products – 4,42 mln tn were transhiped, -8,4% or -403,4 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 3,05 mln tn were transhiped, +4,6% or +134,2 thou. tn yoy;

- metal – 2,73 mln tn were handled, + 2,0% or +54,2 thou. tn yoy;

- scrap metal – 865,8 thou. tn were handled, -14,1% or -142,4 thou. tn yoy.

 

Within the period of January – May of 2015 Klaipeda Seaport cargo handling turnover increased by 4,7% to  15,56 mln tn, i.e.  more by 693,7 thou. tn comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Year-on-year changes of overall turnover  in January - May of 2015 according to cargo types:


Liquid cargo – 4 354,6  thou tn were handled, +37,4% or +1 185,7 thou. tn yoy;

General cargo – 4 605,4 thou. tn were handled, -2,3% or -107,1 thou. tn yoy;

Dry and bulk cargo – 6 602,3 thou. tn were handled, -5,5% or more -384,9 thou. tn yoy.

2 655 vessels were reported to call Klaipeda Seaport in January – May of 2015,i.e. less by 2,9% or by 80 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of 2014. 

 

This means that the segment of larger vessels continues to increase relatively. Statistical data of the late years proves that the number of gross tonnage vessels calling Klaipeda Seaport has been constantly growing.  382 vessels above 200 metres in length called the Seaport in 2013, in 2014 the number of such type of vessels increased to 465 – even by 21,7%.

 

Cruise shipping. In May of 2015 the cruise season was launched in Klaipeda Seaport – 6 vessels called the Seaport with 10 798 passengers on board.

 

In January – May of 2015 the growth of cargo handling turnover by 1,1% was achieved in the FREEPORT OF RIGA – altogether  17,28 mln tn were handled ( the yoy change was  +191,5 thou. tn ).


Such a significant growth was achieved due to dynamics of basic cargo categories:


- the most abundant cargo of the Seaport is coal. 6,22 mln tn were handled (+1,2% or +73,8 thou. tn yoy);

- oil products – 4,82 mln tn were transhiped (+3,0% or +140,2 thou. tn yoy);

- containerised cargoes – 1,63 mln tn were handled (-0,1% or -1,2 thou. tn yoy);

- fertilizers – 1,16 thou. tn were handled (+26,5% or +242,6 thou. tn yoy).

 

The reason of such a robust growth of handling volumes of fertilizers were the intensification of  handling operations at the new Riga Fertilizer Terminal (the joint project of the Freeport of Riga Port and Uralchem). 

 

Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 183,1  thou. passengers in January – May of 2015 (the yoy change was -40,7% or -125,6 thou passengers). 

 

In January – May of 2015 the cargo handling turnover in the SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS comparing with the corresponding period of 2014 dropped down to 11,78 mln tn , i.e., -13,0% or -1,76 mln  tn yoy.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – May of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 7 359,0 thou. tn were transhiped, -4,2% or -322,0 thou tn yoy;

- coal – 2 663,0 thou. tn were handled, -21,0% or -706,0 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 740, 0thou. tn were handled, -1,6% or -12,0 thou. tn yoy;

- timber – 228,0 thou. tn were handled, -8,8% or -22,0 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 139,0 thou. tn were handled, -87,3% or -953, 0 thou. tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic. Within the analysed period 31 858 passengers called the port of Ventspils, i.e., more by 38,3% or by 8 828 passengers comparing with January – May of 2014.

 

Vessels. In total the Seaport accommodated 619 vessels, the yoy change was -9,8 pct, or -67 vessels.

 

The overall throughput in the JOINT PORT of TALLINN in January – May of 2015 was 10,40 mln tn, i.e.,-20,0% or – 2 601,0 thou. tn comparing with the corresponding period in 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – April of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 6 510,2 thou. tn were transhiped, -29,4% or -2 706,5 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 1 788,7 thou. tn were handled, +9,5% or +154,7 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes – 733,6 thou. tn were handled, -13,8% or -117,6 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 647,4 thou. tn were handled, +5,1% or +31,6 thou tn yoy.


Passenger traffic. In January –May of 2015 the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 3 350,1 thou. passengers, i.e. less by  1,2% or by 39,9 thou. passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Vessels. 2 804 vessels was reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. more by 1,6% or by 43 vessels  comparing with January – May of 2014.

           

7,03 mln tn of cargo, i.e. more by 0,3% or by 22,3 thou. tn  were handled in  VYSOTSK SEAPORT  in January – May of 2015 comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Only two categories of cargo are handled in this Seaport:


- oil products – 4,86 mln tn were handled, -1,8% or -91,3 thou tn yoy;

- coal – 2,17 mln tn  were handled, +5,5% or +113,6 thou tn yoy.

 

The total throughput in the PORT OF KALININGRAD was 5,38  mln tn,  i.e., less by 3,7% or by 205,3 thou. tn than in January – May of 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – May  of  2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 900,3 thou. tn were transhiped, -16,8% or -181,9 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 735,5 thou. tn were handled, +46,5% or +233,3 thou. tn yoy;

- metal – 470,4 thou. tn were handled, -4,9% or -24,1 thou. tn;

- grain – 434,4 thou. tn were handled, 2 times, or by +220,1 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes – 321,3 thou. tn were handled, -41,9% or -231,9 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes (TEU) -62 026 TEU were handled, -58,9% or -88 793 TEU.

 

The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA in January – May of 2015 was 2 265,8 thou. tn, +0,2 % or +5,0 thou. tn yoy.

 

Basic cargo categories making the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – May of 2015 were as follows:


- grain – 1 109,7 thou. tn were handled ( the throughput of grain handling accounts  as many as for 49% of the overall cargo handling), the yoy change  was -4,2% or -48,6 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro – Ro cargoes – 293,6 thou. tn were handled, -8,0% or -25,5 thou. tn yoy;

- timber– 274,1 thou. tn were handled, +23,7% or by +52,6 thou. tn yoy.


Passenger traffic.  The number of passengers calling the Port of Liepaja was 15 750  passengers, i.e., less by 1,3% or by 214 passengers yoy.

 

Vessels. In January – May of the current year 590 vessels called the Seaport, i.e., less by 4,5% or by 28 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year.
