Lithuanian PM: employees of Tourism Department not to blamed over travel agency's bankruptcy

BC, Vilnius, 26.11.2014.Print version
Several days ago Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius said that officials of the State Department of Tourism (VTD) should take responsibility for bankruptcies of several travel agencies in the last year. However, now the prime minister has changed his position and says that employees of the VTD should not be blamed, informs LETA/ELTA.

Talking to the national radio LRT on Tuesday, the head of Government reiterated that similar cases could have been avoided if tighter legal regulation of the tourism business sector would have been carried out.

According to the prime minister, it has to be admitted that the lack of legal regulation provisions in the Law on Tourism and the simplified supervision of travel agencies led to such situation. However, blaming every VTD employee who only sees quarterly or six month financial documents of travel agencies is very complicated.

On Monday the Ministry of Economy held a meeting over amendments to the Law on Tourism implementing tighter supervision of travel agencies. It was proposed to establish an effective regulatory mechanism which would enable to suspend the activities of risky travel agencies.

As reported, President Dalia Grybauskaite stated that the VTD has not learned from past mistakes and the competence of its management raises doubts. After yet one more travel agency managed by UAB Freshtravel terminated its activities in November 2014, all of the top leaders, the president, the Seimas speaker and the prime minister, have criticised the VTD. Moreover, the Opposition went further on claiming that Minister of Economy Evaldas Gustas' is unsuitable to head the ministry.
