Lithuanian PM: Tourism Department must take responsibility for the bankruptcies

BC, Vilnius, 20.11.2014.Print version
Staff of the State Department of Tourism (VTD) under the Ministry of Economy should take responsibility for the bankruptcies of several travel agencies in the last year, says Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius and calls for their resignations, cites LETA/ELTA.

According to the prime minister, if employees of the Department of Tourism saw that they had no instruments for a tighter control of travel agencies, they should not have kept silent but instead submit proposals and amendments to the Government. Butkevicius said that people who failed to do this "must take responsibility and leave office".

"I have in mind the responsible employees of the Department (of Tourism – ELTA). I think this calls for an in depth analysis over why those tourism companies were supervised carelessly. And I think the minister of economy should decide whether to disband the whole department, or... It is difficult to say, but I think people working in the Department of Tourism must take responsibility," the prime minister told the Ziniu Radijas radio on Thursday.

As reported, after yet one more travel agency managed by UAB Freshtravel terminated its activities last Friday, all of the top leaders, the president, the Seimas speaker and the prime minister, have criticised the VTD. Moreover, the Opposition went further on claiming that Minister of Economy Evaldas Gustas' is unsuitable to head the ministry.
